Advances in Understanding and Treating Psychosis |
Roughly 5 million Americans are living with a psychotic spectrum disorder, and at least twice as many are indirectly affected. Psychotic and related symptoms have historically been difficult to treat with conventional psychiatric methods. Hopelessness, stigma and misconceptions about the refractory and inherently pathological nature of psychosis have perpetuated inadequate and narrow care. Yet longitudinal research indicates that most individuals with schizophrenia do get better, and psychotic symptoms are far more common, understandable and modifiable than previously believed. Dr. Kopelovich will present on advances in understanding and treating psychosis that are leading to better lives for those affected and their loved ones. |
Predicting an Outbreak: Insights from the Seattle Flu Study |
Influenza epidemics and pandemics cause significant morbidity and mortality; an effective response to potential influenza pandemics requires public health infrastructure to rapidly detect and contain new and emerging flu strains at a population level. Dr. Chu’s research focuses on studying the impact of influenza and other respiratory viruses in the community. She is the lead clinician on the Seattle Flu Study, which seeks to create models of how influenza enters and spreads in a major metropolitan area and develop ways to stop its spread. |
Building a Better Scar: How to Engineer “Designer Scars” that Repair the Injured Heart |
For decades, researchers have explored the possibility of building a more perfect scar — an intervention that could revolutionize treatment for heart disease and other leading causes of death. Heart disease begins when scar tissue replaces muscle tissue after a heart attack, reducing the heart’s capacity to contract and relax and limiting blood flow to the body. Dr. Davis will discuss how her lab’s discoveries are helping scientists understand this critical biological process and how to control it to improve our ability to heal. |
